Hiking the Middle Atlas Mountains

Untouched trails right from your doorstep

Escape the tourist trail and hike through olive groves, ancient cedar forests, and authentic Berber villages where traditional life continues unchanged.

Villa A Guest House sits right at the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains, meaning incredible hiking begins exactly where our driveway ends. Unlike the heavily trekked routes in the High Atlas near Marrakech, the trails around Beni Mellal offer complete solitude and an authentic glimpse into rural Moroccan life.

You can start with a gentle, 2-hour loop through the ancient olive groves that surround the city, passing local farmers and shepherds. For a more challenging day, head higher into the mountains towards Dir El Ksiba or the cedar forests to the east.

There are no marked trails or crowds here. You will walk on paths worn down over centuries by mules and shepherds. As you pass through small mud-brick villages, it's common to be invited in for tea — this region is famous for its genuine, unspoiled hospitality.

Getting There

Step out the front door of Villa A and start walking up the hill! For deeper mountain treks, we can arrange a local guide and transport.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

  • Always hike with plenty of water, as there are few places to buy supplies once you leave the city limits.
  • Since trails are unmarked, hiring a local guide (which we can arrange) is highly recommended for longer routes.
  • Dress modestly when hiking near or through local villages out of respect for traditional customs.
